The Value of the Gospel Is in the Resurrection (August 12)
The gospel’s value does not lie in its power to remove the difficulties of this life; its power is the promise of resurrection to eternal life (1 Peter 1). May God help us, against the spirit of our age, to put the emphasis where the apostles put it.
If God Commands It, We Can Be Courageous (August 11)
As you consider obeying the gospel, many of the “what ifs” will be frightful. I won’t insult you by saying that your path will be easy. But this much I know: if God commands it, it can be done. Our prayer is not for ease but for boldness.
Resolution (August 12)
In God there is this great hope: all that now seems difficult and contradictory is going to be cleared up. Had any detail of our experience been different, we’d have become something less than the unique creatures that God turned us into in the end.
Hearts in Tune (August 11)
From our vantage point in the here and now, the life of radical faith may seem to involve more sacrifice than serenity. But in the end, the hearts that will have found peace will be those that have come to rest in the purposes of God.
No Little Jobs, Only Little People (August 12)
Whatever we do in the Lord, we know it will accomplish something worthwhile. That’s true because it is the Lord, not we ourselves, who will take it and turn it into something good. It doesn’t depend on us or the “importance” of what we’ve done.
When Willingness Becomes Work (August 11)
Our destiny is usually determined by what we do on the days when there was nothing very positive or negative to deal with, just a lot of work to be done. Being “dedicated” enough to go to heaven comes down to rolling up our sleeves and working.
Fearlessness (August 12)
Most of the time, the shortest way out is “through.” We can’t make our problems disappear, but we can deal with them honorably. We may be afraid, but we can be true to our deepest principles. That’s the only kind of fearlessness that counts.
Reasonableness (August 11)
Too often, we ignore the good reasons that should guide us, and we do things that are unreasonable, if not completely irrational. But reason can’t be ignored without consequence. If we defy what is reasonable, the “school of hard knocks” awaits us.
DFBS 233 – We should be grateful for the spiritual help that others give us
As Christians, we are more fortunate than we know to have people who love us. In God’s family, we are blessed to be surrounded by brothers and sisters who will not only try to help us, but who will attempt to do it in the very best way possible.
DFBS 232 – God blesses those who turn their hearts toward Him
Life’s greatest decision is this: will we submit to God or reject Him? Let’s be warned by the picture of the wicked in Psalm 1, but let’s also be encouraged by the blessing and happiness of the one whose “delight is in the law of the Lord.”
July 2025
With the current loss of some support, I am reminded not to take for granted the help that so many of you provide. It is a blessing for which I want to be a good steward. And I hope you see it as I do: this is a work we are doing together.
May 2025
I’ve always said that a writer shouldn’t publish anything he’s not prepared to meet again at judgment, so I’m asking if my previously published pages are truly the best that I can do. Before I die, I hope to publish revised editions of all the older books.
