I am often asked what are the books, other than the Bible, that have been the most influential in my own thinking.
While I was writing Reaching Forward, a book called Heaven: The Heart’s Deepest Longing by Peter Kreeft came to my attention, and it has become one of my most beloved books of all time. Kreeft is a Roman Catholic scholar, a philosopher who teaches at Boston University. I had been familiar with some of his other books but not this one. When I discovered it, I found Heaven to be nothing short of stunning.
Kreeft beautifully makes a point that I have been trying to emphasize for quite a while: God planted eternity in our hearts and made us such that we have a deep, ineradicable need for the total joy that can only be found in Him.
While you won’t agree with everything in Heaven, if you like my book Diligently Seeking God, I think you’ll find Kreeft’s book provocative and stimulating. Since the writer is a philosopher, some of the book requires careful attention and concentration, but it’s worth it. I recommend it highly.
